The A-Z of Emotional Intelligence – H is for Habits

Emotional Intelligence Test

The small things don’t matter, right?

After all, they are only small. What does it matter that you didn’t make the bed, do the washing up before you went to bed last night or go to that gym class you’ve been meaning to go to for the third week in a row.

Wrong.

What we do every day matters more than what we do once in a while

We quite simply are what we do every day. The small actions we take every day, add up to make the sum value of our life and the love that we bring to the world.

If you make the bed as soon as you get up in the morning, you have achieved something before you’ve even left your bedroom. It shuts down your inner gremlin before they have even had a chance to wake up for the day and simultaneously sets you up for a good nights sleep the following night. You will skip the nighttime trigger for the gremlin inner dialogue of

“Errrgghh, this room is so messy, why didn’t i make it earlier? I love getting into a crisp nicely made bed… Maybe tomorrow…”

But the washing up isn’t a big deal!

Theoretically no. But for your mindset, it can have long-ranging effects. Think about how it feels to walk into your kitchen when it’s clean and clear and ready for a day of nourishing you. Then think about walking into the kitchen when it’s covered in last nights dirty dishes and leftover dinner, what does it smell and feel like to be in each situation?

Which will jump-start your day in a better frame of mind?

The clean and clear one right? Doing these small things achieve a number of results

  • They are easier to do – When they are done straight away they are a lot easier to manage

  • It encourages a more positive frame of mind – Your environment helps contribute to the outcomes of your day, living and working in a clutter-free environment encourages clearer thought and a calmer atmosphere.

  • Fewer distractions = Fewer excuses to take you away from the things that are important to you.

  • They shut down the inner dialogue gremlins – You know that inner chatterbox that is always able to not only notice but roll a continuous highlight reel of when you have ever done anything wrong? You are feeding them less, therefore they have less to talk about and will pipe down.

  • Feed an inner cheerleader instead! I know it sounds cheesy, but think about how you feel when you listen to what those inner dialogue gremlins say. It’s not great, is it? Imagine the difference if you cheer the things you set out to achieve in the day and build on a more positive inner talk. Start to cheer all the things that you achieve in a day, every last one. I promise you, your energy will shift into a more positive space that will touch other areas of your life too
