The A-Z of Emotional Intelligence – G is for Gathering

Emotional Intelligence test

Emotional intelligence can be developed if you gather the right information…

Emotional intelligence is not fixed, it is like a muscle and can be trained. Your emotional intelligence profile will come out differently depending on your emotional state on any given day. The good news is that with careful consideration and some work from you, it is possible to gather evidence and develop yourself to become more emotionally intelligent.

When you train your body you may research different types of exercise to determine which are best for you based on your body type, goals and the time you have available to train. This helps you make a decision about what you would prefer to do.

When you start to train you continue to gather information as you go.

  • Do you have more energy?

  • Are you getting the results you desire?

  • Do your clothes fit you better now?!

  • Do you need to change your diet too?

You gather information all the time about how your new fitness behaviours are affecting you and your body. You then adapt your daily habits in order to get better at training and closer to your fitness goals.

Developing your emotional intelligence should be approached in the same way, the more you observe and gather information about what’s working or not in your personal and interpersonal relationships. The better you get at adapting your behaviours and attitude to live more of your sweet days and have more confidence in creating days that are sweeter for you.

Your journey to developing your emotional intelligence will involve a lot of gathering of information. You will become adept at observing what is going on with yourself and those around you which will help cultivate better work and personal relationships.

How does emotional intelligence gathering work in practice?

For example, you might spot that you are particularly affected if you don’t get enough sleep. You noticed that you are more likely to get grouchy and then this triggers a bad day at work and at home. Gathering that information can motivate change in your day that helps you avoid stressful days simply by going to bed earlier (Easier said than done i know! But possible with some discipline and in your control…)

Similarly, the knowledge that you rely on other people for assurance more than the average person might make you reflect on why that is. Are there other ways that you could approach the the situations in which you tend to do this in order to make you feel better about yourself, and develop different dynamics in your relationships?

With careful practice you will notice things about yourself and others earlier, this awareness will encourage curiosity, compassion and courage to take different approaches than you may have done before. This in turn increases the chances of new conversations and better outcomes for you and the people you care about.

There are multiple areas across the personal and interpersonal emotional intelligence spectrum that, with a little attention can radically change how you show up in your life over time.
