Attitude – Choose your own adventure!

According to Emotional Intelligence Profiling attitude is:

“An evaluative position (based largely on feelings) towards oneself, others, a situation, an idea, etc. that predisposes an individual towards certain behaviours or responses.”

— Joylon Maddocks, 2018

Emotional Intelligence Profiling (EIP) recognises and measures Emotional Intelligence (EI) at the attitudinal level. It unlocks unconscious beliefs and biases that may underpin your thinking and feelings which drive your behaviour. This awareness unlocks opportunity to develop sustainable change through new focused habits.

Unconscious or subconscious beliefs are made up of your own learned experiences but can also be absorbed from things that happened before you were born. You soaked up energy in utero, you took in the experience and opinions of your family and those around you as you grew up. You watched how they did things and subconsciously inferred a way to live from those observations.

Some neuroscientists claim that only 5% of your actions are managed by your conscious thoughts. Of these unconscious thoughts that run the show, up to 70% of these learned behaviours are disempowering according to Dr Bruce Lipton. So accessing your subconscious beliefs is very important if you want to change the outcome of your days and ultimately your life.

Have you ever heard yourself say things like?

“Work is hard”

“Money doesn’t grow on trees”

“It’s alright for some”

Or have you ever been surprised to learn that you love a food that you grew up hating, simply because one of your parents didn’t like it?

These things may seem subtle on the face of it, but if all your thoughts are loaded with the attitudes of others learned experiences, as well as very old programmes of your own, and they are overwhelmingly skewed to see a negative outcome you can see how attitude can get awry over time.

Attitude controls the outcome of your day

Have you ever had a day from hell, where everything goes wrong? You spill your morning coffee, then trip over as you walk up the stairs, run late for the train, then your meeting, then end up in a foul mood and have an argument with your partner when you get home?

Improved Emotional Intelligence can give you the tools to stop in the midst of the calamity and change the course of the day before you get to the foul mood and resulting damaged relationships.

Attitude influences how you feel

Think of improved Emotional Intelligence as a way to choose more positive outcomes in a choose your own adventure book, at the point you spill the coffee you can say one of two things:

$%^ now i’m going to be late… I’m so stupid! Why am I always late? And lead off down into a stress vortex for the day.

Or

Ooops, thank goodness it didn’t land on the carpet/shoes/my top! and simply move on from it and onto the next task.

Which do you think garners the more positive outcome of the day?

Improved Emotional Intelligence encourages awareness of attitude towards the self, others and your propensity to change.
