A-Z of Emotional Intelligence – O is for Opportunity

3 ways improved Emotional Intelligence can help create new opportunities

Are you doing a job that you didn’t think you’d end up in? Do you often feel like you are living someone else’s life? As if your destiny is something different, but you’re not sure what or how you will get there. Do you feel like you can offer so much more to the world, but aren’t sure how to unlock your potential? Deepened emotional Intelligence can offer personal insights into your untapped and unrecognised strengths as well as cultivate the self-awareness to develop your weaknesses.

1.     Emotional Intelligence encourages heightened self-awareness

Improved Emotional Intelligence helps you observe and manage yourself better. Sensing your feelings and understanding what’s really going on. It helps you notice what’s fear Vs. what’s motivation to grow when you are going through change or challenging situations. It gives you greater agency when assessing options.

The awareness helps for the things that aren’t necessarily your strong points too. Observation of sub-optimal traits allows you to review what’s not longer serving you, and in turn, encourage the creation of new ones. As although it’s easy to feel like they are simply “part of you” any limiting habits you have were learned over time, so with conscious effort, a clear plan and focus you can create new more positive ones in their place in the same way only to positive effect!

After a short while of practising these skills on a daily basis, they will soon become second nature. This self-awareness habit will start to kick in without you having to consciously think about it, giving you a more rigorous in-built filtering system for your emotions and feelings. You feel calmer and more in control of situations that might have overwhelmed you in the past.

2.     Improved emotional intelligence helps your present as well as your future

The 16 scales are grouped into core areas that reflect your ratings on attitude, feeling and behaviours. The three quadrants identify different areas in which you may be excelling or alternatively have blind spots where you may be limiting yourself and the people around you.

So first stop is to celebrate yourself, and all the areas you shine in. Seriously, this bit is important. It’s so easy to get caught in the bits that aren’t going well (it’s what our brains are programmed to look for after all!) But that’s not the only story here.

We can work on the other areas later, the profile gives you a really good map for this. But for now, we start from a position of strength, as contrary to popular belief we do not need to be good at all things all the time. You and the people around you will be far happier when you play in your power and claim your sovereignty in what you are good at.

We will look at the other things later in terms of how you can call in support for these. As it’s often not about filling in the gaps so to speak but gathering the right team or tribe around you so you are all working in your element and filling in each for other.

That’s the goal, building better humans that can flow together not thrive apart.

3.     Emotional Intelligence helps you make better decisions

Honing your ability to tune into your attitude, feelings and behaviours better mean that you will get better not only at reading your own needs and signals but those around you as well. Just imagine what it feels like to walk into situations at work and home armed with clarity of underlying dynamics. It gives you breathing room to make decisions with more considered outcomes.
